A few observations of mine, having read all these replies. As a precursor, I agree that this installment is certainly the most poorly written one. However, I think some people are getting a bit "out of range" in the comments.

[1] Even if Heth is a "typical tyrant", that doesn't mean the whole Caldari State operates as such. While he wields an exalted and powerful status, he still sits in a State run by a conglomeration of corporations, each keenly aware of cost and value. What Heth says on his pulpit can be a far cry from the true motivations inside the boardrooms and stockholder meetings. Which alludes to the fact that...

[2] Just because CCP doesn't write a chronicle about it doesn't mean it isn't a reality. They make it plain that the State has a dubious and hate-prone leader at the forefront, who is also exerting some forms of censorship and authoritarian control over the populace. And that's it, from what I gather. The State is no stranger to authoritarianism, much of society revolving around the strong principles of duty and purpose upon which authoritarianism itself is based. We have no insight on the machinations of the rest of the billions of State citizens and military. We the players have (or can have, should you choose) a large role in defining the mentality of the empire.

[3] A few people have made mention of the "shades of grey" fading away, if you will. While the onset of a massive war does tend to make things more black and white, the "grey" is still very much there. You could just say it's harder to see in the contrast of extremes. Picture it like this. On your right, you see a stern-looking guy in a **** costume screaming a bunch of nonsense and gesticulating wildly. On your left, a guy in flamboyant colors dripping in jewelry and peace-symbols shouts another bunch of nonsense from beneath his massive afro. Will you notice the average-looking guy in a baseball cap and jacket standing in the middle? Or the man in the suit watching the ******-immitator with a grin? Or the portly woman and her granddaughter feeding some birds beside the Peace-Monger's pulpit? What do they (read as We, the players) think of these characters?

[4] Which brings me to my final point. A few people have commented that they feel hindered by these chronicles because they bestow a particular atmosphere or attitude on their empires and thusly their characters. That's a depressing lack of imagination. I wouldn't presume to tell anyone how to react, but for my part, I'm quite pleased to be a part of the Caldari State regardless of Mr. Heth's beliefs or tendencies.
I really wish these stories where adding depth to factions, and not just merely making them look like stupid asses.

take Amarr for example, you can bet your boots that it's going to be a great big long tirade making them out to be all evil soulless monsters. Fine, we get it, CCP doesn't like fundamentalist christian bigotry, but how about trying to add something to the fiction? The empire hasn't had a leader for years, no longer is a 'true' theocracy (in the sense that religion is loosing power to corporations), and are still recoiling from their defeat at the hands of the Jovian Empire (supposedly), and, when an emperor finally shows up, it's a clone of some long dead heir, and all the other houses just forfeit their power in favor of someone who, according to previously established fiction, is of unpure flesh, and therefore not legally able to become emperor to begin with!

Or the minmatar, for example, stealing money from the Gallente federation earmarked for their people, to build a big ass fleet, and go on a glorious yet ultimately pointless killing spree, and yet we hear nothing of the outraged poverty strikened families, who would undoubtedly be ****ed off that all that money was wasted on a bunch of ships to start a war that didn't need to happen.

Why is it that we never see stories about disillusioned Amarrians, or minmatarians sick of war, for example?

After briefly scanning this thread I would just like to say a few things;

1. Not all dictators are fascist, and therefore they aren't all Adolf's. Chairman Mau was a communist dictator (as is Kim Jong-il and many others are/were), and it seems to me that the Caldari State has a lot more in common with a communist regime rather than a fascist one as they hold nationalist ideals and from the past chronicles it seems that the image of the common worker in the Caldari state is a downtrodden mass, and lets not forget that the rise of every dictator was due to a mix of skill and circumstance. Heth was in the right place at the right time and could turn the situation to his advantage, only the people with the will to do this will do so and Heth is one of those people.

2. Again, someone has to be the bad guy. And someone who has the strength to do what must be done (which all the leaders have had so far, they are leaders for a reason lest we forget) will have to be able to put the emotion to one side, as Heth did when he contemplated hitting the guy again. This is the key part, he decided that he could do it again, to me at least this does not seem like someone ruled by emotion when he is in the thick of it.

3. Just because a victim says that they don't think that the attack was racially motivated doesn't mean it wasn't. The excuse could have been the kiss, but the motivation could well have been racial.

4. Also the Caldari are the most numerous race atm in EVE, maybe it's time they learned what they are...

((Yes, as a piece it is well written, but shines little light into Heth's ideology or motivations. The EVE novel does a much better job .. which CCP SHOULD have sold to active accoutns at a discount ... cheapskates.

Heth is a Fascist, wasn't the first, won't be the last. He is a bigot, the Novel explains a bit why. But with the political support he received from the other corporations, and his own little "sturmabteilung" the Rank and file caldari citizen has little choice but to comply. Again, another historical parallel. History DOES repeat itself.

The other two chronicles provided FAR more insights as to the inner workings fo the minds of the leaders of the other two nations. I look forward to the Amar one.

Now the point is ... Heth is in power, what is next? He was put in power by a confluence of many unrelated events. What will sustain him, and when he inevitablly falls, what will be its cause and what will arise as a result?

In the case of 1930s Germany, it was a world war that destroyed the nation and led to the collapse of theReich. What will CCP do here? Repeat history? BORING! thats the easy out .. or will they provide us a backstory to work with?

I am not fond fo the PvP bias of EVE ... I wish there were more story arc missions in high sec. Perhaps some relating to the conflict? Something that might lead to some final outcome? a Heth flavor arc and a "gariushi-esque" arc? ))

Citizens of the State,

We have been presented with a great challenge. The ideals that our founders have set down for us are being challenged. We, the State, are a meritocracy at heart, the work of the one will determine his/her place in society. Those that strive, achieve, those who cannot, will be provided for. We must preserve who we are while rewarding those who shine brigth. The corporation is the ladder upon which we take our steps out of medicority.

Heth is correct in his perception that the Megacorporations, specifically the heads of their boards, have garnished too much power and too little compassion from where they came from. They have become a race unto themselves. They are responsible to noone and have no checks and balances. The Greatest Caldari, Otro Gariushi is dead. His life has been snuffed out by forces greater than us all, but his memory must live on. He alone saw the greatness that was Caldari and had led and guided Ishukone to the model corporation, profitable, yet mindful of its most important assets, the employees in its ranks.

Heth's anti-racial propaganda does not alter the fact that Gallente and Caldari are, at their deepest roots, cousins. Born of the same celestial mother Luminaire, but treading two different paths in life. We cannot blame the Galletne for the failings of a few.

Now, it is us, we the Caldari Capsuleers who must reflect on our actions. Gariushi was the light, Heth was the cleansing flame. We must be the embers from which a new beacon of Caldari must be kindled. We must protect those in the State who cannot protect themselves. We must be mindful of our neghbhors and respect their uniqueness.

We are the new elite.

What we do will change the face of the universe, we are Immortal, at least until proven otherwise. Will we be corrupted by power? So tempting is its siren's call. See how easily the heads of our boards sucumb. Or will we be responsible, defiant and proud in our moral and ethical righteousness. The Gallente do not hold a monopoly on virtue.

Heth cannot last, he is not a CEO .. he is a powerful figure, bright, passionate, fiery ... but he has neither the skills nor aptitude to sustain his flame. We must ensure that his fire does not consume us all. Caldari AND Gallente.

"Quis custodios, Ipsos Custodiens?"

Only our conceinces.

Thank you for your time and patience.

Lt.
Now now, let's not get overexcited about the race part. Most people here seem to overlook a couple of things that the chron implies at the start.

To me, young Heth here is portrayed as a sort of a thug - mean, aggressive and cold. A KK bodyguard on station duty, and those are said to be maybe not the meanest, but the most likely to break regulations.

Second, the person that was interviewed stated that both he and his companion mocked Heth. You don't blow a kiss to a dead serious thug when you're a guy not expecting to get your face hammered in now do you?

Third, as someone already said, the victim does not think the attack was racially motivated.

Edited by: Miyamoto Uroki on 17/07/2008 06:28:50
For buying the book in germany: I preordered my copy from amazon.de and they delivered my hardback after 4 days of release date. Try it there.

Spoilers (don't read it if you haven't read the novel yet and still plan to!!!!):

And yes, Heth is definately only a puppet. Granted, he is good at firy speeches addressing the masses and he's also a capable combat veteran, but he could never mastermind the downfall of the caldari state as we knew it.

After all, Heth's "master" is ruining the state system because of a high person inside the state denying him a deal. An incredible valueable deal, safe to say on a epic scale. This also reaches into the minmatar-amarr plot here (don't want to get into details so much as you still should read the book, really). And now he fasten the downfall of the already crumbling caldari state system and provoking racial uprisings (the Admiral Noir incident..his work. The "mad dogs" chronicle happenings...his work. the caldari constructions deal...well, obviously his work. Allowing Heth to adress the whole state..his work again.

This is where I think ccp made that character look too overpowered, although he was already introduced by ccp about 4 years ago in another chronicle, and even then he was described powerful enough to play on empire scale level. Though I find it a bit ridiculous to describe him as as rich as the biggest megacorp in the state.)

So it all comes down to economic reasons again, backstabbing and rivalry of leaders. I haven't finished the book yet, but until now there are at least 2 ex-CEOs of caldari megacorporations who seek to end Heth's life and end his tryanny as ofc they were forced to retreat by the provist forces (Heth's bloodhounds really).

Interesting part is, what will the puppet master do now? Certainly he will make big profit from all the wars going on, but will he help Heth in future?
Another big mystery and lots of grey is the involvment of the Jove. They are guiding and watching this whole process. They made some key-moves to allow this events to unfold, so one can also say that the Jove are another puppet master, sitting above the whole conflict.

(for example, the Jove allowed Sarum's minions to find that ancient weapon which she used to destroyed that minmatar fleet. Usually the jove are hiding all these findings from the empires. And no, the weapon wasn't Jove technology btw. It's far more ancient)

Originally by: Puupuu
dude... your face

The forced and sudden ascendancy of Heth left him with many mortal enemies, still rather powerful and just waiting for the right moment to make Tibus Heth to a Glorious Martyr of the Caldari State and wrap things up in a face saving and ultimately profitable manner.

Interestingly enough 'Heth' is a letter from the Proto-Canaanite Alphabet, a voiceless uvular fricative, which might hint on what Tibus really is: A hapless puppet of a decaying puppeteer.

Personally I doubt the creative heads at CCP are so unimaginative as to just rehash all too recent history. It'd be too easy, too obvious, too one-dimensional.
--------
Ideas for: Mining

One event ten years ago, with somebody who looks like him (considering the number of people supposedly in the EVE universe, it would be supprising if there was not somebody who looked like Heth)beating up a half Gallente following what appears to be a serious (and therefore stressful) incident
does give a good enough angle on current events.

I just thought of this but has anyone had the thought that the whole point of this story may have been to subtlety show Heth to be a puppet of someone else or a group? IE hes just a figure head so that if things go south they will string Heth up instead of them?

Consider this for a moment that the guy says it was like heth didnt see him, like he was kinda just zoning out and than the after math, that doesnt strike me as someone who could essentially mastermind the take over of the caldari state.
Can't honestly say I approve of it. I mean it was well-written and all, but Jesus.

Foiritan is all tough-minded and "I gave peace a chance and now I'mma kick some ass." Shakor is wise and (wisely) reluctant to assume the mantle of leadership, but puts the needs of his people above his own. And we learn these things first-hand, from watching their interactions with their subordinates.

And what do we Caldari get? A third-person film-noir that makes our guy look like the skinhead from Oz. Great.

Can't wait to see how Sarum turns out. Probably Cruella de Ville meets Torquemada or some shit.

Quote:
Tibus Heth = EVE's Adolph ******.

I think they're certainly angling for that, which sucks since the largest plurality of EVE's players are Caldari.
Edited by: Brandoe Chung on 15/07/2008 13:14:05
Could be that CCP is counting on us to decide this little war. Maybe they are hoping that if they infuse this kind of rhetoric into the story line, that a lot of the Caldari podders will rise up against Heth. Just because your character in the EVE universe has no idea about events that happened on Earth, doesn't mean you don't. A lot of us had family alive who fought in the last war, from a historical point of view it's still very fresh in the minds of society.

I can't speak for anyone but myself but it would be really hard for me to distance myself from that. I'm glad I'm Gallente, but if I was Caldari after reading this story I would join the Gallente milita right quick.

But you could look at it like this. Take a country like the United States. It has one head of state that all the mega corporations are behind, and it has been indulging in domestic spying and censorship for years, and yes even before 9/11 they have been doing this, maybe not to this extent or with this much publicity. It exists on some level in almost every so called 1st world country right now. No offense to any Americans out there just used it as an example.

So maybe there are more shades of grey than they are letting on. We still don't know the Jovian's motivations in this war.

Never quote me the odds

Also agree with most points in this thread. Especially with the above poster.

Shades of grey are always way more intersting, especially as the Eve universe is painted as a dark and cruel place mostly.
A little more twists for minmatar and caldari leaders would have been good.

Though I will wait with a full comment until I finished the Empyrean Age novel. Also people almost always forget about the fact that we simply DON'T know most of the things from the book or the chronicles. These are all out of character insights, which really no capsuleer as in-character can know of.
So despite you see lots of RL analogies and stuff (and ofc there are lots because inhabitants of eve are still human after all), your character won't even notice them. Not to mention your char has absolutely no knowledge of history of some weird place called "earth".

I find the different flavours of politics really impressive tbh. It reflects very nicely the situation on our reality on this small planet. And imho ccp always have added lots of shades of grey in the past, and I'm pretty confident that they will continue to do so in the future.

Yes, of course there is always room to do it more epic with even more details and sidestories, but who should pay for all the writers that would be needed. Not to mention of readers that would be willing to read all the stuff.

Originally by: Puupuu
dude... your face

Agree with many of the point raised here.

Bad form CCP. I understand that the writers probably didn't want to present each of these Chrons in the same way but we were promised an in depth look at the mindsets of all the four leaders in the time leading up to the war and this is more a random anecdote from the past of the most mysterious character in this war and we are no closer to understanding his motives/.

Certainly the backstory released has backed up accusations that the Caldari are being made into the bad guys. Something thats not really fair or cool with me. I want depth, not good vs evil and I want a deeper understanding of what is probably the most contrived and unbelievable event of eve history (The hostile Megacorps just giving up their independance to follow one ultranationalist without a shed of doubt).

It's not enough to say 'Read the novel and all would be explained' Faction Warfare has always been promised as the saviour of Roleplay in EVE and it's really starting to do the opposite. The IGS is overrun with repetitive 'My county beats your country' threads, the major roleplay corps/alliances of the Caldari have found it impossible to really support the actions of their nation because they have been so poorly explained and these chronicles are drawing the ideologies in a painfully familiar dichotomy.

Space-****s!" Once novelty of playing a space-**** in Factional Warfare wears off in about couple of months, CCP expects that people will either move to 0.0 and abandon all attempts at roleplaying or exploring the storyline in any meaningful way, or just quit.

I just really do not understand this. It appears that CCP trying to make storylines and chronicles as formulaic and simplistic as possible. They have explicitly stated that they want to move people to 0.0 as much as possible, so it looks like making unpalatable Empire storylines is the way to achieve it.

Why do it? Can't we have good storylines in Empire AND in 0.0? Can't we have events influencing each other? I simply do not understand the current direction. It alienates long-term RPers who losing interest in staying with the game, newcomers find it hard to engage with shallow "heroes and villains", 0.0 Alliances have no reason to pay any attention to roleplaying.
I think this article reveals somethng that I have suspected since Heth's initial rise to power: Tibus Heth = EVE's Adolph Hitler.

Don't believe me? Take a close look at it, it's all there; Cruelty as a soldier, involvement with labor organizations, pseudo-communist rhetoric, Hyper-Nationalism, Blatant racism and racial scapegoating for internal problems, a willingness to sacrifice others for personal advancement, and a consistent grab for power.

Any one of these things alone would be nothing. Put them together, and you have a recipe for National Socialism/Dictatorship on a Galactic level. Trust me, it will only get worse. Next comes the straightforward nationalizing of industries not currently under Heth's control, and the call for "Caldari Purity" which will lead to pogroms and death camps for Gallente Ex-Pats still living in Caldari space.

Congratulations Caldari, You have just become Intergalactic Space Nazis.

Tactical Logistics using the last T1 Frigate hull!
